Gregory…why are your paintings signed Frederic. G ?

CrewlArt’s paintings are signed with his last name first and his first initial last.

It is a customary practice in Haiti, where Gregory was born.

In Haiti, official records are often written with the family name (last name) placed before the given name (first name). This practice comes from French record-keeping habits during the colonial era. French officials and census takers recorded family members by their lineage or household name first for administrative order. Even though many Haitian people write their family names first on documents, they usually call each other by their given names in everyday conversations. Because the practice of flipping names depends on the context, filling out official United States forms often leads to confusion for Haitian born US citizens. He chose to continue this tradition when signing his acrylic paintings….now you know!
